Events: WSF presents The Capitol Steps

June 24, 2014

The Capitol Steps, a Washington DC-based comedy troupe that began as a group of Senate Staffers, will present a show based on songs from their current album “Fiscal Shades of Gray” in the Pennsylvania Ballroom at Clarion Hotel & Conference Center, 148 Sheraton Drive, New Cumberland, PA on 21 September 2014.

The Capitol Steps have been a Washington, DC institution for over thirty years, providing a unique blend of musical and political comedy to our Nation’s Capitol and more. Each show consists of tasteful lampooning guaranteed to leave both sides of the political spectrum laughing. The troupe started in 1981, when John McCain was only 63 years old! Since then, they have appeared on “The Today Show,” “Nightline,” “CBS Evening News” and for many years in specials for National Public Radio.

Their show is constantly changing, strenuously bi-partisan, and includes songs about everything in the news, such as “Putin on a Blitz,” “You Can’t Hide This Biden Guy,” and “Greece! The Musical.”

If you’ve ever wanted to see Barack Obama sing a show tune, Nancy Pelosi sing a rock song, and New Jersey Governor Chris Christie do a classical ballet, this might just be the show for you!

In addition to the performance, heavy hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar will be provided as well as a silent auction taking place. All proceeds to benefit the World Surgical Foundation.

Doors open at 1:30 PM. Tickets can be purchased from Whitaker Center. For ticketing information, visit whitakercenter.org or call +1 717 214ARTS (2787).

Mission Status: Philippines 2014

February 6, 2014

The World Surgical Foundation will be screening patients for its annual surgical mission in the Philippines on 16 February 2014 at General Santos City Hospital. Surgeries are scheduled from 17 to 21 February with eight OR stations operating at the same time. WSF expects to perform at least 250 major procedures in the areas of pediatrics, plastics, urology, ENT, Maxillofacial, OB/GYN, and general as well as any emergency surgeries not already on the pre-screened patient lists plus 50 minor procedures under local anesthesia.

After completing the mission in General Santos City, Drs. Domingo and Veneranda Alvear travel to Cebu City where WSF is holding its 3rd Annual Pull-through Mission, screening patients on 23 February 2014, and performing surgeries from 24 to 26 February. Dr. Alvear and seven local pediatric surgeons working at four OR stations are teaming up on this focused mission. Forty patients with various anorectal malformations are listed for surgery.

World Surgical Foundation continues to hold these pull-through missions because only a limited number of patients can be helped each year. Anorectal malformations occur once in every 4,500 live births, and many of these can be corrected immediately. Patients that are unable to have corrective surgery right away receive a temporary colostomy and may have to wait years or live with a colostomy bag for life. This is where WSF steps in to change their lives by giving them a normal life instead of being ostracized and hiding in shame.
